Bukchon Hanok Village

 (북촌한옥마을)

where the present meets the past

Bukchon Hanok Village is one of the great places in Korea you should visit at least once.
The village is home to many traditional Korean houses (Hanok). รีวิวเวอร์ชั่นภาษาไทย สามารถตามไปอ่านได้ที่ลิงก์นี้ค่ะ Bukchon Hanok Village หมู่บ้านโบราณใจกลางกรุงโซล

This was where relatives of royal families and high rank officials resided in during the Joseon Dynasty. Bukchon literally means the northern village which came from that this area is located at north of the Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno street, the two popular landmarks in the heart of Seoul.

Walking along this road, seems I were in Korean dramas. It’s unlike others areas in Seoul where there are various types of skyscrapers or high-rise apartments. The traditional Korean houses are still inhabited by residents. You can catch a glimpse of residents' day-to-day life. The contrast of modern life and traditional house is the best point of this place.

At Gahoe-dong Alley, you can see the traditional Korean houses along with modern buildings and N Seoul Tower as the background. I always feel that this is where the past meets the present. Every time I go to Korea, I always visit this place. I'm really impress with this place.

There are 8 iconic views of Bukchon you should try to find photography spots. Getting a map of Bukchon area from tourist information or volunteers is recommended so you will not get lost. It takes a few hours to walk all areas but it's worth.

1. Chengdeokgung Palace view over the stonewall
2. Wonseo-dong handicraft road
3. Hanok at Gahoe-dong 11-bunji area
4. Gahoe-dong 31-bunji from the hilltop
5. Gahoe-dong alley (downhill)
6. Gahoe-dong alley (uphill)
7. Gahoe-dong 31-bunji alleyway
8. Samcheong-dong stone stairway

Nowadays, several Hanoks turns in to antique cafes, restaurants, guesthouses, homestays, museums, galleries and cultural centers. Apart from learning Korean cultures at the cultural centers, having some brunch and tea at Hanok café is a great idea. Another activity that is trendy here these days is wearing Hanbok (Korean traditional dress) or old Korean school uniform.

This village is the filming location for many Korean dramas such as Personal Taste, Heartstrings, I Need Romance 2012, The Heirs, Winter Love Song, etc.

If you don’t know where to start, I suggest you to visit Bukchon Traditional Culture Center. There is permanent exhibition regarding Hanok. You can find the maps and volunteers here too.

Since this is a residential area, please keep in mind to be quiet and do not disturb the neighbors.

You can also walk down from Bukchon to Samcheongdong, another beautiful area of Seoul especially during autumn season. Bukchon is also surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine so you can visit there as well.
