2015 Autumn in Korea Tour - Day 3 Part 1 - Gangchon Rail Bike (강촌레일파크), Dak galbi (옛터숯불닭갈비) in Chuncheon

by - Saturday, April 09, 2016

Our third day started so early since we had to go countryside !
We headed to Chuncheon (Gangwon-do) for taking Gangchon rail bike.

Our starting point is at Yongsan Station (용산역) to take ITX to Chuncheon station (춘천역).
It takes about 1 hour by ITX to get there.

The ITX is the second high-speed train in South Korea after the KTX.

Oh and you might be familiar with the name Dragon Hill Spa (드래곤힐스파).
It's kinda famous for the tourists when it comes to spa or jjimjil-bang in Seoul.
It's located here beside Yongsan Station. (I Park Mall also.)

I had time for exploring inside Yongsan station before our scheduled train arrived.
There are a lot of shops such as convenient stores, cafe and book store.

Then it's time for taking ITX.
This was my first time taking this ITX train
though I had been to Nami Island before
but that time I just took a normal train not ITX.

Inside ITX is really comfortable just like KTX.
There are monitors to tell each station name along with announcement
so no need to worry you will miss your destination.

Here we were at Chuncheon Station (춘천역) to take our bus to
Gangchon Rail Bike Park.

Gangchon Rail Bike Park (강촌레일파크)

Gangchon Rail Park is a popular attraction among tourists
where you can ride a bike (with 2-4 people) on the old railroad along the Bukhangang River.
It's located nearby Nami Island (about 3 stations) and Petite France.
It's also the filming location of  Running Man episode 144 !

It’s approximately 8 km with one stopover (after 6 km) for 5-10 minutes for a toilet and snacks.
Then take the Nangman Train (so called Romantic train) to the Gangchon Village parking lot.
After that you can take the free shuttle bus (run every 30 minutes)
at the parking lot back to Gimyujeong station.

(I suppose this was Jaz unni's hand XD)

You can adjust the pedals to make the bike fit yourself.
Yes! It's not automatic bike so you have to pedal it!!!
I would say you need amount of legwork.
From suggestion I had got from staff, the taller people should sit at the back.
Put your belongings under your seats and fasten your seat belt for safety.

Keep yourself to find poles along the way with cameras and smile to them.
(of course, there is a sign to let you know those are cameras
but you have only few seconds to act and smile before them snap).

One more thing. You need to pedal it to keep pace with other bikes in front of you
unless you will make a bottle neck and staff will urge you to pedal faster.

 The scenery along the way.

Stopover (about 6 km from the starting point) for a toilet break or grab some snacks

The scenery at the stopover was so amazing!
The river along with the mountain and rail way makes surrounding more relax.

There was also a small waterfall.

After taking a break, we took a Romantic train or Nangman Train.

Ticket price:
2 people = 25,000 won
4 people = 35,000 won

I would like to suggest you to make a reservation in advance especially during peak periods.

Here is timetable (vary by season) :

You can check for any update for timetable and price at Railbike website.

If you come by yourself (not having a private bus like me),
you should get off at Gimyujeong station
then walk less than 5 mins to Gangchon Rail Bike Park.

Please watch my video to get more idea about Gangchon Rail Bike experience.
Taking note that I went there during middle of November.
It's almost winter in Korea.
Have warm clothes because you will be outside and face wind for at least 2-3 hours.

Since we were at Chuncheon, we needed to try the most famous local food here,
Dak galbi (닭갈비)
To tell you, it's one of my most favorite Korean food.
I had once when I went to Nami Island.

This time we went to 옛터숯불닭갈비
(Sorry that I am not sure how to romanized the restaurant name in English)

There were many celebrities had visited here.
You can see from their autograph and photo wall.

Here were our Dak galbi.
The chickens were already cut into small pieces so it's easy to grill them.

Though Emo (aunt) still helped us grilled them.
I love the red paste. It's a bit spicy for me but not much.

I did request for not spicy one
so Kim unnie ordered the chicken which were not spicy for me.
She said this was her first time for eating this Not-spicy-Dakgalbi thanks to me.

When I was writing this blog, I was hungry and wanted to eat Dak galbi again. >..<
