Korean Ornamental Knot Workshop in Thailand
I've learned about Korea by watching Korean soap operas
and variety shows for many years.
When the Korean Cultural Center in Thailand held
the "Korean Treasures From Seoul: The New Path of Korean-Thai Arts and Crafts" exhibition,
they also had a Korean handicrafts workshop.
All the workshops were conducted by famous Korean artists.
I didn't hesitate to apply for the knot tying class.
Applying for classes at the Korean Cultural Center in Thailand is highly competitive.
There are always many people who want to participate in the interesting workshops.
You have to be fast and enroll as soon as they post the classes on their Facebook profile.
They only accept a very few students in each class.
Thus, when I successfully registered my name in the artistic knot class,
I was extremely happy and looked forward to it.

Our teacher in the artistic knot tying class was Kim Eunyoung,
a famous master of traditional Korean ornamental knots (maedeup, 매듭).
She speaks English fluently so we didn't need a translator.
She told us the tale of her life and how she become a master of her craft.
I will refer to her as Seonsaengnim (선생님),
which means "teacher" in Korean, for the rest of this article.

Kim Seonsaengnim’s father was a poet and her husband is also
an artist and the owner of the Gansong Art Museum (간송 미술관).
The museum is the oldest private museum in Korea.
She asked us to visit her museum when we go to Korea next time.
She has been designated as an official human cultural asset and a master of craft.
In fact, Korea.net has referred to her before,
in the article "Exhibition of traditional decorative knots ties Italy to Korea," too.
Kim Seonsaengnim made a visit to the historical province of Ayutthayato
to learn about Thai history and handicrafts.
She noticed that Thailand’s traditional knots are somewhat different from Korean ones.
She explained briefly about maedeup, the traditional ornamental knots
we were going to lean about in our class.
Maedeup were widely used for many daily objects, including flags,
clothing accessories, wall paintings, instruments and home decorations,
every since Joseon Dynasty.
The shapes of the knots are from nature, such as dragonflies,
butterflies, lotus flowers and chrysanthemums.
We learned how to do a 2-in-1 bracelet & necklace by using do rae knots (도래 매듭).
Kim Seonsaengnim told us that do rae knots are a basic
and simple knot for beginners to start with.
The said that the knot mimics a 3-month-old baby’s head.
Mothers do this by turning the baby’s head to the left and right.
This is why they called the knot a do rae knot (도래 매듭).

Kim Seonsaengnim showed us how to tie the knot step-by-step.
The teacher walked around the class and helped students one by one when they were lost,
so we didn't have to worry whether or not we would make it by the end of class.
At first, it was a bit hard to follow,
but once we watched her do it a few times, we could eventually make it.
The final step was when Kim Seonsaengnim would tie the bracelet around our wrists
and then do the last knot to make the end.
She said that my wrist was small like a baby's,
so she had to make another knot especially for me.
I also filmed how to tie a do rae knot (도래매듭).
I m deeply honored to have had the opportunity to
learn about traditional Korean ornamental knots from Kim Seonsaengnim,
the Korean master of knot crafts. She's so talented and kind.
It was such a great experience.
