[Review] GOONON, ON Saenggwabang with Joseon Royal Family’s Herbal Rice Cake Kit
‘Goongon’, ON Saenggwabang with Joseon Royal Family’s Herbal Rice Cake Kit
Korea.net Honorary Reporters and K-influencers get a great opportunity to experience and enjoy the Goongon - the experience of the Korean palace at home with two different kits. I have got both ON Moonlight Tour and ON Saenggwabang kits.
ON Saenggwabang 생과방 (Tea Room) is a kit to make Guseonwangdogo (구선왕도고), the representative Korean medicine healthy rice cake for the royal family of Joseon Dynasty. According to the “Dongui Bogam” a Korean book compiled by the royal physician, Heo Jun (1539-1615), it is said that Guseonwangdogo has an excellent effect on improving digestion and immunity. The main ingredients included 9 different herbal medicines that are good for the stomach and kidneys.
The inside of this elegant gold-white dragon box consists of
- ON Saenggwabang Manual and Instruction
- Dried glutinous rice flour
- 2 types of Korean traditional dessert for decoration
- Paper tray
- 7 types of mixed herbal medicine powder :
*Pine tree root
*Lotus fruit
*White magpie beans
*Adlay
*Cinnamon vine
*Malt powder
*Lotus flower seed
Additional supplies I need to prepare :
Salt, Sugar, Water, Mixing bowl, Plate, Sifter, Steamer, Silicone steamer pad, Pot, and Knife

I was trying my best to make this royal rice cake since I am not good at cooking. There is a cooking video with English subtitles so I was able to follow with ease. I pretended to be Dae Jang Geum (대장금), the leading female character in Jewel in the Palace, a famous Korean historical drama being known as one of the primary proponents of the Korean Wave by heightening the spread of Korean culture abroad. The main themes are her perseverance and the portrayal of traditional Korean culture, including Korean royal court cuisine and traditional medicine.
The rice cake turns out well and looks so traditional and tasty. It goes well with the traditional Korean tea I have.
You can watch the review video at https://youtu.be/hiznrOJ7MuE
There are also onsite traditional Korean tea and food Experience programs where you can enjoy this at Gyeongbokgung Palace. Check and make a reservation at https://www.chf.or.kr/chf/eng
Thank you KOCIS and Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation for the great opportunity!
