ROK - Thailand Relation Past to Present
The first encounter between Korea and Thailand has been traced back to the late 14th century when the Kingdom of Siam sent its envoy to Goryeo Dynasty. Since then, the interactions between the two countries had rarely taken place until the turn of the 20th century.
In 1949, Thailand formally recognized the newly independent ROK, thus becoming one of the very first group of nations in the world to do so. Moreover, the Thai government immediately dispatched a Royal Thai Army regiment to fight side-by-side with Korean and 15 other nations' combat troops when the Korean War broke out.
During the Korean War of 1950-1953, the lives of 129 Thai soldiers had been sacrificed and 1,139 soldiers wounded to defend the noble cause of freedom and democracy in Korea. Their valor and sacrifice are still vividly remembered and deeply appreciated by the Korean people.
Korea and Thailand formally established diplomatic relations only after they agreed to the exchange of minister-level diplomatic representative on October 1, 1958. The opening of Korean Embassy in Bangkok in February 1960 and the opening of the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul in the following year have laid solid foundation for strengthening the bilateral cooperation.
In 2018, Korea and Thailand masked their 60th anniversary of Korea-Thailand relations.
On 11 November 2022, There was the Bilateral Meeting between Prime Minister of Thailand and President of the Republic of Korea, H.E. Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol. The Prime Minister of Thailand reaffirmed the readiness of the Royal Thai Government to strengthen cooperation with the Government of the ROK, in particular on the occasions of the 10th anniversary of the Thailand - ROK Strategic Partnership (November 2022) and the 65th anniversary of Thailand - ROK diplomatic relations (October 2022 - September 2023)
